Weblog server connection upgraded

The weblog server now uses an upgraded 4MB/1MB ADSL connection - with new IP address - and should experience less "down time" from now on (I hope).

It was a bit of a disappointment that the weblog server (a machine up at the attic of my own home) went down just as I had left to visit the Borland Developers Conference in San Francisco. This was due to the ADSL modem at home which sometimes lost the connection, and had to login again (after the ADSL signal had been initialised again).
Fortunately, my ADSL provider has upgraded me to a higher bandwidth connection, using RFC1483 which basically means that you no longer have to login. So when an ADSL connection is lost, and later reestablished, then the server is right back up and running (without the need to manually login again). Hopefully, that will help to keep it up longer. And we now have a higher speed: 1MB uplink (which is the bandwidth used for all of you reading the blog), which used to be 512KB or even 256KB earlier this year.

All this also resulted in a new (dynamic) IP address, which is currently 85.146.33.29. I've opened both port 4242 and port 80 (for those who cannot use 4242), but cannot guarantee that this IP address will stay fixed. Your best bet is to use http://www.drbob42.com/blog or http://www.eBob42.com/blog which will be updated as soon as the IP changes again.

So, apologies for the lack of continuity in the past few weeks, but hopefully we're back in business now, including an up-to-date RSS feed.
